Comments | The red Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Cailloux takes its name from the countless rolled pebbles found in the vines, which are the source of the estate’s name. The 2021 vintage is the result of an attractive harvest in perfect health and good grape maturity. It develops typical red fruit and spice aromas. On the palate, we find the fruit as well as more complex aromas of garrigue and white pepper. The tannins are smooth and elegant. It can easily be drunk young, but will also benefit from a few years’ cellaring, |

The estate | The Brunel family has been involved in winegrowing since the 17th century. In 1954, Lucien Brunel founded Domaine Les Cailloux. It grew rapidly from 1971 under the impetus of André Brunel. He was one of the first in Châteauneuf-du-Pape to use grass cover and a non-chemical approach to vine growing. In 2012, his son Fabrice Brunel joined him to continue the family tradition. Domaine de 19 ha en AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge, et 2 ha en blanc, répartis sur une dizaine de quartiers. |
Viticulture | The vineyard is made up of multiple parcels, each with its own characteristics, giving this wine its incredible complexity. A meticulous analysis of the terroir has enabled us to determine the most suitable grape varieties and the most appropriate vine-growing methods. The average age of the vines is 60 years. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand. Harvesting takes place between late September and early October. |
Winemaking | 100% destemming for all grape varieties. Racking and delestage for 5 weeks, followed by 18 months’ ageing in 1 to 2-year-old barrels for the Syrahs, and 18 months’ ageing in concrete vats for the other grape varieties. Final blending lasts 6 months before bottling. |
