Tasting notes |
The 2023 vintage was less warm than in previous years, allowing Grenache to retain its crispness and freshness once vinified.
Sommelongue is a rich, fruity, silky wine with a long finish. It is a well-balanced wine with very supple tannins and a pronounced taste of spice and licorice. |
The estate |
The Brunel family has been involved in winegrowing since the 17th century. In 1954, Lucien Brunel founded Domaine Les Cailloux. It grew rapidly from 1971 under the impetus of André Brunel. He was one of the first in Châteauneuf-du-Pape to use grass cover and a non-chemical approach to vine growing. In 2012, his son Fabrice Brunel joined him to continue the family tradition. Domaine de 21 ha en AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape, including 2 in white, spread over ten districts. |
Viticulture |
A single plot located north of Orange, this one benefits from optimal sunshine, enabling Grenache to ripen in ideal conditions. The clay and limestone soils on the surface are underlain by a gravel subsoil that facilitates drainage and drainage after rainfall. Controlled grassing reduces the vigor of the Grenache vines, resulting in moderate yields and well-balanced, ripe wines. The average age of the vines is 40 years. Harvesting is exclusively manual. |
Winemaking |
Côtes-du-Rhône Sommelongue 2018 is vinified in concrete tanks. The grapes are 80% destemmed, then put into vats for a short 24-hour cold maceration, followed by a 4-week hot maceration with punching down and délestage. Malolactic fermentation takes place in enamelled vats for 1 year. |
