Comments | This red Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Cailloux takes its name from the countless rolled pebbles found in the vines, which are the origin of the estate’s name. The 2019 vintage is the result of a very attractive harvest in perfect health, with good ripeness and a fine balance between acidity and alcohol. It ranks alongside the appellation’s great vintages such as 2010 and 2016. It develops intense aromas of red fruit and a hint of wood. On the palate, we find the fruit as well as more complex aromas of garrigue, white pepper and orange peel. The tannins are smooth and elegant. It can be drunk young, but it is with ageing that it will reveal its full potential. Jeb Dunnuck 92-94/100 |

The estate | The Brunel family has been involved in winegrowing since the 17th century. In 1954, Lucien Brunel founded Domaine Les Cailloux. It grew rapidly from 1971 under the impetus of André Brunel. He was one of the first in Châteauneuf-du-Pape to use grass cover and a non-chemical approach to vine growing. In 2012, his son Fabrice Brunel joined him to continue the family tradition. Domaine de 19 ha en AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge, et 2 ha en blanc, répartis sur une dizaine de quartiers. |
Viticulture | The vineyard is made up of multiple parcels, each with its own characteristics, giving this wine its incredible complexity. A meticulous analysis of the terroir has enabled us to determine the most suitable grape varieties and the most appropriate vine-growing methods. The average age of the vines is 60 years. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand. |
Winemaking | 100% destemming for all grape varieties. Racking and delestage for 5 weeks, followed by 18 months’ ageing in 1 to 2-year-old barrels for the Syrahs, and 18 months’ ageing in concrete vats for the other grape varieties. Final blending lasts 6 months before bottling. |
Food & wine suggestions | Beef tenderloin, saddle of lamb stuffed with herbs, duck breast cooked at low temperature. |
Operating temperature | 18°C |
