Tasting notes | Despite a more difficult vintage, Jérôme once again demonstrates his talent for brilliantly producing a cuvée in line with his previous successes. Silice rouge 2021 is slightly lighter than its predecessors, which is a plus for those who prefer a less rich wine. However, it’s all there: its typical aromas of ripe fruit and black pepper bewitch the senses. On the palate, the same aromatic complexity is accompanied by succulent tannins. |

The estate | The fifth generation of winegrowers, Jérôme has been working alongside his father Pierre since the 1998 vintage. By producing fine, elegant wines, he has left his mark on the Domaine, and likes to say that “it’s the sum of the small details that makes the difference”. And if their wines are almost beyond reproach today, they owe it in no small part to the constant quest for excellence that has driven every generation of Coursodon. The Domaine’s vineyards (16 ha, including 13.5 ha of reds and 2.5 ha of whites) are mainly located in Mauves, the cradle of Saint-Joseph, on granitic soil, a favored terroir for Syrah. A few parcels are also located in the communes of Glun, Tournon-sur-Rhône and Saint-Jean-de-Muzols. |
Viticulture | The vines are planted on steep slopes of schist and granite, with south-southeast exposure. The yield is 36 hl/ha at a planting density of 7,000 vines/ha. No mechanization is possible, which is why all viticultural work is carried out by hand. Finally, the whole harvest is transported in 40 kg containers to the winery, where it is first sorted. |
Winemaking | Table sorting at reception, followed by destemming. Cold pre-fermentation maceration is followed by fermentation in open vats for 15-18 days, with 2 daily punchings of the cap. Finally, the wines are aged in oak barrels (pièces and demi-muids) for 12 months. |
Food & wine suggestions | Silice 2021 is a perfect match for Navarin en avignonnaise or farm squab with chanterelle mushrooms. |
Operating temperature | 18°C |
Also worth discovering | Paradis Saint-Pierre, the estate’s legendary cuvée, a Holy Grail for lovers of exceptional Syrah. |
