Description | Red Hawaiian salt. Unrefined sea salt. Originally collected from the Molokai salt flats in Hawaii, it is then mixed with a sacred volcanic clay called Alaea (or Alae) in Hawaiian. This clay is rich in iron oxide, which gives the salt its attractive red color. The sea salt is dried in the sun and then, once completely dry, mixed with this famous purified red clay. This is what gives it its exceptional flavor and color. In fact, Hawaiian Red Salt colors foods and gives them a subtle, mellower taste than other salts. In Hawaiian tradition, adding Alaea purifies and blesses the salt and, by extension, the food. |
