Les Cailloux red 2021, Châteauneuf-du-Pape red AOC, André Brunel

Regular price CHF 36.00

Description

The Châteauneuf-du-Pape red Les Cailloux takes its name from the countless rounded pebbles found in the vineyards, which also gave the estate its name. The 2021 vintage comes from a beautiful harvest of perfectly healthy grapes, which reached excellent ripeness. It develops typical aromas of red fruit and spice. On the palate, the fruit is present alongside more complex aromas of garrigue and white pepper. The tannins are smooth and elegant. It can easily be enjoyed young, but will also benefit from a few years of cellaring.

Food and wine pairings

It will be the perfect partner for a beef Wellington fillet as well as a duck breast cooked at a low temperature.

The vineyard, comprised of numerous plots, each contributing its own unique characteristics, lends this wine its incredible complexity. Meticulous terroir analysis has allowed for the selection of the most suitable grape varieties and the most appropriate vine-growing methods. The average age of the vines is 60 years. The harvest is exclusively manual, taking place between the end of September and the beginning of October.

100% destemming for all grape varieties. Racking and pumping over for 5 weeks, then aging for 18 months in 1- to 2-year-old barrels for the Syrahs and aging in concrete tanks for 18 months for the other grape varieties. A final blending takes place over 6 months before bottling.

Domaine André Brunel

The Brunel family's winemaking activity is documented since the 17th century. In 1954, Lucien Brunel established Domaine Les Cailloux. It experienced rapid growth from 1971 onwards under the leadership of André Brunel. He was notably one of the first in Châteauneuf-du-Pape to practice cover cropping and adopt a non-chemical approach to viticulture. In 2012, his son, Fabrice Brunel, joined him to continue the family tradition. The estate comprises 21 hectares in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC, including 2 hectares of white grape varieties, spread across approximately ten different vineyard areas.

Southern Rhône Valley

It is one of France's major wine regions, renowned for its many iconic appellations. Stretching along the Rhône River between Vienne and Avignon, it is divided into two distinct parts: the north and the south. The latter is a vast mosaic where the AOCs (Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée) give pride of place to Grenache Noir, primarily blended with Syrah and Mourvèdre. White wines are represented notably by Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, and Roussanne.

In the south, the diverse terroirs of rolled pebbles, sand, and clay produce generous, sun-drenched, and warm wines. The Rhône Valley is also marked by a long winemaking tradition and a strong commitment to respecting the terroir. Many winemakers there now practice sustainable viticulture.
