Description

Hawaiian Red Salt. This is an unrefined sea salt. It was traditionally harvested from the salt flats of Molokai in Hawaii and then mixed with a sacred volcanic clay called Alaea (or Alae) in Hawaiian. This clay is rich in iron oxide, which gives the salt its striking red color. The sea salt is sun-dried, and once thoroughly dry, it is mixed with this purified red clay. This is what gives it its exceptional flavor and color. Indeed, Hawaiian Red Salt colors food and gives it a subtle, smooth, and more mellow taste than other salts. In Hawaiian tradition, adding Alaea purifies and blesses the salt and, by extension, the food.
